Welcome to Wesley Church Melbourne!
Who are we?
Wesley Church is a congregation of the Uniting Church in Australia. The Uniting Church was formed in 1977 when the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches joined to form one Australian church. Wesley Church was previously the Methodist ‘city church’ and remains proud of its Methodist heritage while joyfully embracing being part of the Uniting Church.
We share the church building with the Gospel Hall (Chinese-speaking) Uniting Church congregation with whom we have an active partnership.
Our core values and beliefs
We are proudly part of the church universal, the ‘one, holy, catholic and apostolic church’, and we are committed to partnership with other Christian churches where possible.
Belonging to the Protestant/Reformed family of the Christian church we place a high value on scripture, availing ourselves of the best contemporary scholarship and connected to the contemporary context.
We aim to be an inclusive community, welcoming people of diverse cultures, ages and sexual identities.
History
The church, a neo-Gothic-style bluestone building, was built in 1858. It recently underwent significant restoration works. For a fuller history please see the History page.
How to get here
The church is located at 136 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, between Russell and Exhibition Streets. There is no onsite parking, however street parking within walking distance is often available. The nearest train stations are Melbourne Central and Parliament, each about 5-7 minutes walking distance.
What to expect at Worship
In ‘normal’ times we have a morning service at 11am and an evening service at 6pm (see our Worship Services page).
Our community is multicultural with members from many different ethnic backgrounds.
Our worship style is quite traditional but not overly formal.
We have a choir in the morning services each fortnight who sing mainly from the classical tradition.
The congregational singing uses a variety of traditional and modern hymns and contemporary songs.
Children
We have a Children and Families’ ministry for a small but active group. We don’t offer a separate Sunday School program. Instead, there are children’s educational activities conducted in the church in a dedicated area on the theme of the day’s worship. Children from time to time participate read the scriptures for the congregation and offer their musical gifts in worship. (Children and Families)
